Exploring one of the Greatest Theorists of his Time: Charles Darwin Our Society depends upon science, and yet to so many of us what scientists do is a mystery. The sciences are not just collections of facts, but are ordered by theory; which is why Einstein could say that science was a free creation of the human mind. (Bowler) Charles Darwin is one of the most famous scientists and theorists who had ever lived. Darwin has been written from his background to his evolutionary theory and on the reception of Darwins ideas in his own time and in the years after his death. (Bowler) Everybody connects Darwin with the theory that all organisms are descended from a common ancestor, and many know that he was by no means the first to say so.†¦show more content†¦His apprenticeship did not last too long due to his weak stomach at the site of blood. Darwin met a freed slave named John Edmonstone, he taught Darwin how to stuff and mount birds. Shortly thereafter he joined the Plinian Society. It was then in 1827 that he presented a discovery to the Plinian Society that the black spores found in oyster shells were the eggs of a skate leech. Darwins father heard through letters from Darwins sisters that he was no longer interested in medicine. Darwins father refused to have a dilettante for a son, so he sent Darwin to Cambridge. Darwin took more interest in his extracurricular activities than he did his major, a clergyman. â€Å"It was at Cambridge that Darwin realized what he wanted to do with his life. In his last year at the university, he read Personal Narative of Travels to the Equinoctial Regions of the New Continent, During the years 1799-1804 by the German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) and A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy by the English astronomer Sir John Herschel (1792- 1871). This â€Å"stirred up in me a burning zeal to add even the most humble contribution to the noble structure of Natura l Science,† wrote Darwin. Darwin wanted to become a scientist.
